James Monroe was the 5th President of the United States and the last president to serve that was a member of the Founding Fathers of The United States. Prior to the presidency he was a lawyer who practiced under Thomas Jefferson. He later was a member of the Senate and the Governor of Virginia and rose to national prominence as a diplomat in France where he helped with the negotiation of the Louisiana Purchase. Later during the war of 1812 he held the roles of Secretary of State and Secretary of War under President James Madison.
